Improving automated control and adjustment systems is first and foremost relevant for thermal power plants operating in a wide range of working conditions. Our analysis of the proceedings of the V.I. Krutov Russian scientific and technological conference that took place on January 25th 2017 (referring to session no. 92) formed the basis for our review of the trends in improving these systems. The objects of our study were control and adjustment systems of various thermal power plants, primarily those with piston internal combustion engines. We studied the possibilities these systems offer for solving problems of reducing exhaust gas toxicity and their effect on engine power characteristics, dynamic parameters and fuel efficiency. Based on our analysis of the reports presented, we assessed the current state of these systems and determined promising directions for their further improvement. We also consider primary research areas in the field of fuel injection equipment for internal combustion engines, their work cycles, and adapting engines to running on various alternative fuels.
