The article describes the main ways of improving the systems of automatic control and regulation of heat and power plants. These ways of improvement were discussed at the meeting of the permanent All-Russian Science and Engineering Workshop named after V.I. Krutov. Ever-growing application of electronic control systems in heat engines is considered; these systems are built with the help of the modern microprocessor technology. The systems’ impact on the power and dynamic characteristics of engines, fuel efficiency and exhaust toxicity characteristics is analyzed. The obtained results allow both evaluating the systems’ development and defining the priority research areas in the fields of fuel-injection equipment, engine operating process, engines adaptation for consuming different alternative fuels, including gaseous ones, and in other fields of the engine technology.
